Mauka, is a Hawaiian word meaning “toward the mountains” or “inland.” Hawaiian culture believes there is a balance between the land and the ocean. On the Big Island, it is amazing to see how many different microclimates there are. When people think of Hawaii, they often picture warm tropical weather, sandy beaches, and sunshine. I enjoyed taking moodier pictures on the island's windward, or eastern, side.
